COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. – Robert Lewis Dear, the shooter who allegedly opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic killing three people, declared in court not only that he was guilty, but also that he was a “warrior for the babies”.
According to the Associated Press, Dear, 57, made the comments during a hearing where prosecutors were set to announce the charges against him. In addition to the three that were killed – two civilians and a police officer – nine persons were wounded in the Nov. 27 attack.
“I am guilty,” Dear said. “There is no trial. I am a warrior for the babies.” Later he said, “Protect the babies.”
To date, investigators have never said what a motive for the shooting was, although it was reported that Dear did state to police, “No more baby parts”, a possible reference to a discredited video released by the anti-choice group Center for Medical Progress that claimed to show Planned Parenthood profiting from selling fetal organs. Despite the fact that the premise in the video had been debunked, conservatives have used it as a rallying point against Planned Parenthood, as well as evidence by conservative lawmakers seeking to defund the organization.
Prosecutors intend to charge Dear with first-degree murder, which carries a minimum penalty of life in prison or a maximum penalty of death if convicted.
