We learned today that we lost one of our contributors, someone who had been providing us with articles since 2005 who was also a dear friend. Kam Williams, you will be missed. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Kam Williams, a film and literary critic who over the past two decades published nearly ten thousand articles and reviews, including articles about One People’s Project founder Daryle Lamont Jenkins, and since 2005 was a contributor to the OPP website as well as to Idavox, died Thursday, May 30 from prostate cancer. He was 66 years old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His death was announced Monday by his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his nearly 22-year career as a writer, he was most\nknown for his film reviews and celebrity interviews for websites such as\nRottenTomatoes.com and over 100 publications around the world, ranging from\nlocal papers like Princeton, NJ\u2019s Town Topics to international news chain\nMetro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A prolific journalist, he also wrote countless book reviews,\neditorials and a novel that will be published posthumously later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born Lloyd Joseph Williams in New York City and raised in St.\nAlbans, Queens, Mr. Williams was commonly referred to as \u201cKam,\u201d a nickname short\nfor \u201cKamau,\u201d a name given to him while he was a student at Brown University, by\nfamed Jazz musician Sun Ra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Williams\u2019 path to a career in writing was circuitous. He was a\ngraduate of Brooklyn Tech High School in New York City and earned his Bachelor\u2019s\ndegree from Cornell University in Black Literature in 1974. While receiving his\nMaster\u2019s in English from Brown University in 1975, he first attempted a career\nin screenwriting at Chicago\u2019s WTTW, a PBS affiliate TV station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Mr. Williams, had a diverse set of interests and diverted\nhis attention from writing for business and entertainment law, receiving his\nJ.D. from Boston University in 1978 (along with Bar membership in MA, PA, CT,\nNY and NJ) followed by an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of\nPennsylvania in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Williams\u2019 first wife, the late Kristina Barbara Johnson (who\nhad previously been married to sculptor J. Seward Johnson II, the grandson of\nJohnson & Johnson Co-Founder Robert Wood Johnson I) introduced him to art\ndealing and the antique business in which he subsequently deployed his\ncorporate and legal knowledge for over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Williams had a colorful personality and a commanding presence,\naccording to friends and family. He was a tall African American man with\nfreckles and wore his bright-red hair in a large Afro hairstyle that was\nimmediately noticeable in a crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His diverse life experiences and base of knowledge (he was a\npolymath who read a book a week) made him a compelling conversationalist and\nlead to a brief but recurring guest appearance on the radio show, The Howard\nStern Show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was that experience that later sparked his career in journalism\nwhen a family friend and writer at the Princeton Packet, a local newspaper in\nhis hometown Princeton, NJ, recommended Mr. Williams write a film review of\nHoward Stern\u2019s 1997 biographical film \u201cPrivate Parts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Williams\u2019 intense work ethic and glowing journalistic reputation lead to extensive work interviewing celebrities associated with upcoming film and book releases, including Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Foxx, Mel Brooks, Russell Simmons, LeBron James and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, among many others, including Daryle Lamont Jenkins for what would be his first feature interview<\/a> as the founder of One People’s Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Williams was also a staunch supporter of civil rights-related\ncauses, publishing countless Op-Eds on the topic and later joined the NAACP\nImage Awards Nominating Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of his writing career, he had a deep passion for music and\nboasted a large collection of albums. He enjoyed long daily walks in nature,\nwas an avid sports fan and a passionate Little League baseball coach. He was\nalso an enthusiastic participant in weekly trivia nights with a large group of\nfriends at a local bar in Princeton, NJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is survived by many friends, 4 siblings (Lawrence, Daryl, Teresa\nand Rod) and his 2nd wife of 25 years, Susan, and stepson, Nicholas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
