Howard Reece Costner, currently employed as a Deputy Sheriff\/detention officer in Spalding County, Georgia<\/a>, is a participant in the Alt-Right\u00a0who believes that racism is \u201cnormal\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0who labels non-racist points of view as \u201cdelusional.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Costner claims that he \u201crespect[s]\u201d the founder of the American Nazi Party and \u201cagree[s] with a lot of his [George Lincoln Rockwell\u2019s] points.\u201d<\/a>Deputy Costner also is open about his friendships with current-day neo-Nazis.<\/a>Posting to a group on Facebook,\u00a0Costner even shared a picture of a Nazi flag hanging in his living space<\/a>. A glance at Costner\u2019s social media accounts shows\u00a0Costner\u2019s support for fascist, antisemitic, and white nationalist political projects<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Another Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office employee\/detention officer, Jesse A. Jones<\/a>,\u00a0proclaims on his online gaming profile that \u201cHitler did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/a>Jones is a friend of Costner\u2019s.\u00a0Both<\/a>joined<\/a>\u00a0the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office in late 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

We are not surprised at the presence of a\u00a0hardened ideological racist<\/a>\u00a0in Georgia law enforcement, or about\u00a0another Deputy proclaiming that \u201cHitler did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0There are likely others with the same commitments as Costner and Jones, although some may be better at covering their tracks. With our release of this documentation on\u00a0Deputies Costner<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jones<\/a>, the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u00a0<\/span>must decide if<\/span>\u00a0it will continue to employ\u00a0open ideological racists<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Prior to joining the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office \u2013\u00a0in September of last year, according to Costner\u2019s Facebook<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Costner was briefly in the US military.\u00a0Costner enlisted with the US Army Reserves in early 2016<\/a>.\u00a0However, Costner soon received a medical discharge during Basic Training for exercise-induced asthma<\/a>. It appears that Costner still wishes to rejoin the military,\u00a0posting online in late 2017 about trying to join the National Guard<\/a>, and\u00a0in early 2018 posting about wishing to enter the Air Force Reserve<\/a>. In the meantime, Costner decided on\u00a0work with Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In one World War Two multiplayer online game,\u00a0Costner is part of a German Waffen-SS division<\/a>. In a US Civil War online game,\u00a0Costner is part of a Confederate company<\/a>. Costner\u2019s choices of fantasy roles in these games reflect his actual political outlook, which is\u00a0racist<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0sympathetic toward Nazism<\/a>.<\/div>\n

Costner operates several online accounts, for example on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>,\u00a0YouTube<\/a>,\u00a0Reddit<\/a>,\u00a0Facebook<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Steam<\/a>\u00a0(a platform used by gamers.) These accounts are interconnected.\u00a0The \u201cHowie3601\u201d Steam account<\/a>\u00a0links to\u00a0Costner\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0displays a photo of Costner\u2019s gaming setup<\/a>that was also\u00a0shared to Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0Reddit user \u201cHowie3601\u201d<\/a>\u00a0describes himself as\u00a0\u201cDeputy Costner [\u2026] a Detention Officer\/Deputy for my county\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0shares videos<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0the \u201cHowie3601\u201d YouTube channel<\/a>.\u00a0Instagram account \u201cHowie3601\u201d<\/a>\u00a0has a profile picture of Costner and is consistent with\u00a0Costner\u2019s Facebook<\/a>. (Costner\u2019s\u00a0Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0Instagram<\/a>, and\u00a0Steam<\/a>\u00a0accounts are all\u00a0connected to<\/a>\u00a0those of Jesse Jones<\/a>\u00a0as well<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

In his online comments, Costner is clear about racism:\u00a0he describes racism as \u201cnormal\u201d and \u201cnot a problem.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Costner also argues against anti-racism.\u00a0Costner\u2019s response to a YouTube commenter who criticized pseudo-scientific beliefs about race and intelligence was simply: \u201cYou\u2019re delusional.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

Also on YouTube,\u00a0Costner stated that \u201cI have a lot of friends that are National Socialist [i.e. Nazi\/neo-Nazi] that are in the Alt Right.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Costner later added that\u00a0he considers most of these \u201cNazis\u201d to be \u201cnormal everyday people\u201d and that \u201cThey\u2019re not Anti Semitic at all [\u2026] Some of them deny the holocaust [sic] and most of them think it was exaggerated.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Costner writes that the founder of the\u00a0American Nazi Party<\/a>,\u00a0George Lincoln Rockwell<\/a>, is\u00a0someone who he \u201crespect[s]\u201d<\/a>. Among\u00a0the pages Costner \u201clikes\u201d on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0the American National Workers Party, a white supremacist page<\/a>\u00a0inspired by\u00a0George Lincoln Rockwell<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0American Nazi Party<\/a>;\u00a0the white nationalist\/Alt-Right media channel Red Ice TV<\/a>;\u00a0the antisemitic and Alt-Right podcast Fash the Nation<\/a>; and\u00a0OmniphiMedia, which creates white power and neo-Nazi propaganda videos<\/a>. Costner also likes several pages relating to\u00a0the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of Nazi Germany<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Many of Costner\u2019s associates on Facebook are clear far-Right racists.\u00a0When Costner posted a historical German military flag to his profile<\/a>,\u00a0one of his friends<\/a>\u00a0complained that it was \u201cnot the NSDAP flag\u201d (the flag of the\u00a0<\/span>Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei<\/i><\/span>\u00a0i.e. the Nazi Party).\u00a0Another of Costner\u2019s friends<\/a>\u00a0described the Nazi swastika flag as \u201cye olde windmill o\u2019 friendship\u201d<\/a>, a comment which then Costner \u201cliked.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

(Identitarianism is a far-Right and white nationalist movement.<\/a>)<\/span><\/div>\n

On YouTube,\u00a0Costner commented sympathetically on a video<\/a>\u00a0made by Swedish white nationalist Marcus Follin AKA \u201cThe Golden One,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0as well as on a tirade about \u201cJewmerica\u201d by antisemitic propagandist \u201cBrother Nathanael.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

According to Facebook,\u00a0Jesse Andrew Jones joined the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office in October 2017<\/a>,\u00a0just one month after Howard Costner<\/a>. The two appear to have known each other for some time, and even had similar experiences in the military:\u00a0like Costner<\/a>,\u00a0Jones joined the Army in 2016<\/a>\u00a0but was\u00a0discharged due to a medical issue<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

On Facebook<\/a>, Jesse Jones keeps a lower profile than Howard Costner.\u00a0There, Jones \u201clikes\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Right-wing populist\/xenophobic Breitbart website<\/a>, pages relating to 4chan (whose political board is a breeding ground for the far-Right<\/a>), as well as pages mocking \u201csocial justice warriors.\u201d However,\u00a0unlike Costner<\/a>, Jones does not use Facebook to follow explicitly fascist, white nationalist, or neo-Nazi projects. The only Nazi-related page\u00a0\u201cliked\u201d by Jesse Jones on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0\u201cUnseen Photos of World War 2\u201d<\/a>,\u00a0a self-described \u201cnon-political\u201d page<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0posts almost entirely Nazi and Axis images<\/a>, supplied with little context and no criticism.<\/span><\/div>\n

Things are different on\u00a0Jesse Jones\u2019 Steam profile under the name \u201cSlimJerky.\u201d There, Jones\u2019 profile slogan proclaims that \u201cHitler did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0On another part of Steam, \u201cSlimJerky\u201d asks about progress on about a game modification for Hearts of Iron IV which changes \u201cfascist America into National Socialist [i.e. Nazi] America.\u201d\u00a0<\/a>While Jones\u2019 question about the modification could simply be about a gaming fantasy world, other matters cannot be explained so easily.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

This group is the Steam accompaniment for\u00a0the r\/ProtectAndServe forum on Reddit<\/a>, where Reddit\u00a0users \u201cHowie3601\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cSlimJerky\u201d both also posted<\/a>.\u00a0The post history for user \u201cSlimJerky\u201d on Reddit<\/a>\u00a0matches details of Jesse Jones\u2019 life.\u00a0For example, \u201cSlimJerky\u201d wrote on Reddit late September 2017 \u201cim [sic] finally pissing in a cup then getting my conditional offer as a detention deputy!\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The next month, Jesse Jones stated on Facebook that he had begun work at the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a>.\u00a0Reddit user \u201cSlimJerky\u201d also wrote of being discharged from the Army in August 2016<\/a>.\u00a0Jones returned from the Army that month<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In another clear case of Jesse Jones using the name \u201cSlimJerky,\u201d\u00a0in May of this year an account by that name on The Outdoors Trader listed a Glock handgun featuring a distinctive grip plug with an engraved Bible passage<\/a>.\u00a0On Facebook, Jesse Jones had posted a picture of a similar-looking handgun with the same grip plug approximately one week earlier.<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The same \u201cThin blue line\u201d American flag image which\u00a0\u201cSlimJerky\u201d uses as his profile picture on Steam<\/a>, was also\u00a0used as a cover photo by Jesse Jones on his Facebook account.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Finally, one of\u00a0Jesse Jones\u2019 \u201clikes\u201d on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0is for\u00a0the \u201cUndisputed Gaming Army\u201d \u2013 an obscure Facebook page followed by just over fifty people<\/a>.\u00a0One post for the Facebook page of this gaming clan states that \u201cSlimJerky\u201d is the leader of their \u201csteam pc branch.\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n

We have set out evidence of two current employees of the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office \u2013 Howard Costner and Jesse Jones \u2013\u00a0expressing sympathy<\/a>with Hitler\u2019s genocidal regime<\/a>. Both Costner and Jones were hired last year and work as detention officers.\u00a0<\/span>It is unsurprising that ideological racists are drawn to institutions such as the\u00a0military<\/a>,\u00a0police<\/a>, and\u00a0prisons<\/a>. Such positions allow them to get their hands dirty while maintaining\u00a0<\/span>the racist status quo<\/span>, to turn departments into far-Right recruiting grounds, and potentially to do favors for their fascist associates.<\/span><\/div>\n

It\u2019s worth remembering that\u00a0the Spalding County Sheriff\u2019s Office was one of the agencies which assisted the massive state deployment in Newnan, Georgia (nearby Coweta County) on April 21 this year<\/a>.\u00a0There, militarized police brutalized and arrested protesters against the National Socialist Movement\u2019s white power rally.<\/a>\u00a0The Spalding Sheriff\u2019s Office posted social media pictures of its militarized SWAT team on the streets of Newnan that day<\/a>, while\u00a0it announced that \u201cThere is no place for bigotry and racism in 2018.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Our evidence suggests otherwise.<\/span><\/div>\n
