The Plaza M\u00e9xico shopping mall and food court on Lake Street is home to more than 80 businesses that are seeking funds, and many face the threat of eviction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Minnesota Legislature considers economic relief packages, Plaza M\u00e9xico business owners are calling on Governor Walz and legislators to act decisively to expand relief to businesses earning less than $200,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Minnesota\u2019s Largest Latine Shopping Center Seeks Support Following ICE Surge\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1184684290?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business owner Cristian Arcos says 90% of Plaza M\u00e9xico\u2019s stores were shut down for at least two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe barely survived\u2026 All of us have applied [for grants], and just a few of us have gotten the grants. We really need help.\u201d Arcos, who owns a multiservice business that processes financial transactions in the shopping center, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plaza M\u00e9xico business owners held a press conference on April 10 alongside community leaders from Neighbors United, an organization founded by Somali business owners at Karmel Mall. Business owner Waris Mohamud said, \u201cWe\u2019re here to support, we\u2019re going to be hand-in-hand [with Plaza M\u00e9xico] \u2026 We demand our government to support us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juanita Gonzalez owns a quincea\u00f1era clothing store at Plaza M\u00e9xico. She said, \u201cMy business has been severely impacted because I was closed for three months. I burned through my savings, and I had to take out loans, because there was no money coming in, but a lot of money going out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plaza M\u00e9xico workers and customers stayed home regardless of status to avoid abduction and family separation by federal agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what your immigrant status is, it\u2019s about looking Latino, looking immigrant, having an accent,\u201d Arcos said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving to stay home for three months was incredibly harmful for us,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cPlaza M\u00e9xico will not surrender. We need justice.
