As the march came to an intersection, I was in a group about two blocks ahead of the main pack. Our job was to stop traffic until the bigger group caught up to us, then others would relieve us, and we would go on to the next spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is why Trump was elected!\u201d the White driver of a minivan yelled at me as I signaled him to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chuckled and said, \u201cOK, sir. We will be moving soon. Thank you for your patience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy you wearing a mask?\u201d he asked me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo I am not targeted by the state or the rightwing for exercising my rights to protest our government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou look like a terrorist. You better let me through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot going to happen. And the true terrorist is the man who killed a 17-year-old boy. So sit tight and we will be out of your hair,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFuck you, you big-lipped fuck!\u201d he yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did he know I had big lips? Did they push out from the bandana? \u201cDamn are they that big?\u201d I asked the comrades who were with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My comrades laughed. The man in the car didn\u2019t think it was funny. He turned on his car and inched forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey! Fuck off man! Stop your car!\u201d Zach, a member of the Portland\u2019s Resistance street team, yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFuck you! Get out of the way!\u201d He laid into his horn. We didn\u2019t move and more activists joined us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, stop!\u201d someone yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStop!\u201d I yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are going to run over people!\u201d someone screamed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d another person yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He kept coming forward, and I jumped on the hood of the minivan. Other people were banging on the vehicle. Someone took off his side mirror, and then he gunned the car. I fell off and people scattered out of the way. I heard glass break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you OK?\u201d someone asked me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh my God!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe ran through the crowd!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw feet and legs all around me. I got up and brushed myself off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou good, bro?\u201d a young Black man asked me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, all good,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People were milling on the corner. I walked up to Greg. He looked at me and smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou good, bro?\u201d he asked. \u201cYou trying to be the Brown Jackie Chan?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s no big deal. I roll and I bounce, bro. You know me, Super Wetback.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou crazy, but we gotta get this group moving before the pigs come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
