Antifascists Diminish American Renaissance Founder&#8217;s Event at Arizona State University"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Arizona has a lot of high-profile fascists, some of them running for office. That doesn&#8217;t mean Arizona likes it &#8211; or wants more of them in their state.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TEMPE, AZ \u2013 It is a few months before White Supremacist and American Renaissance editor Jared Taylor will be at his annual safe space, the <a href=\"https:\/\/tockify.com\/idavox\/detail\/172\/1668808800000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Renaissance Conference <\/a>taking place just outside Nashville, Tennessee in November, but if he thought that Arizona would be another one for him he might have been dissuaded from that notion as his appearance at Arizona State University (ASU) became a lackluster event for him as he played to a near-empty room, antifascists overwhelmed attendees outside and he ended the event early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event organizers, ASU student group College Republicans United (CRU), which was founded by associates of the neo-fascist \u201cGroyper Movement&#8221; and not affiliated with the College Republicans who<a href=\"https:\/\/kjzz.org\/content\/1806593\/controversial-speaker-asu-underscores-division-republican-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> denounced the event<\/a>, thought that they would have a larger crowd and moved from one hall to a larger one in anticipation of that. In the end however, the new hall with a capacity of 438 showed how sparsely attended Taylor\u2019s talk was. Meanwhile, counterprotesters numbering well over 100 turned out to oppose the conference. Some were able to have discussions with the attendees who were outside before they entered the hall and a number of antifascists gave speeches calling for everyone to continue opposing fascism and fascist events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_43665\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z5u1KEckOss?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;disablekb=0&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to Taylor\u2019s appearance, University officials and event organizers pushed back on anyone who were opposed to a neo-fascist coming to campus to promote his ideology, declaring the event and the views being espoused as being respected in the name of free speech, CRU declaring on Twitter, \u201cOur event is a victory for free speech,\u201d and the university itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildcat.arizona.edu\/article\/2022\/09\/n-jared-taylor-at-asu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying in a statement<\/a>, \u201cASU is a public educational institution that is committed to free, robust and uninhibited sharing of ideas among all members of the University\u2019s community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the free speech pronouncement however, journalists and even ASU students were among those who were disallowed by CRU to even enter the hall if they saw fit to bar them and many called ASU and in particular University President Michael Crow out on this hypocrisy. \u201cThe security guard said, \u2018I\u2019m sorry they\u2019re in charge of all this\u2019.\u201d ASU student Kailash Garcia-Delaney <a href=\"https:\/\/nevalleynews.org\/16794\/news\/white-supremacist-jared-taylor-asu-student-body-protests-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the Northeast Valley News<\/a> after she and two other students were told, \u201cYou are not welcome\u201d by a CRU member. \u201cThe whole point is that we\u2019re supposed to be able to hear opposing perspectives and views that are different from our own but in this moment, we\u2019re not allowed to go hear someone that has a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Directed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ASU?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ASU<\/a> president <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelcrow?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@michaelcrow<\/a>: \u201cWe want fascist scum to go, here\u2019s our free speech, Michael Crow.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2RAvWJ2trp\">pic.twitter.com\/2RAvWJ2trp<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Arizona Right Watch (@azrww.bsky.social) (@az_rww) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/az_rww\/status\/1565889004972564482?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 3, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another student also spoke about the duplicity of the event. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate,\u201d ASU student Chayce Bland told Northeast Valley News, whose journalists were among those who were not allowed to enter. \u201cThis is a college that claims to be the most innovative and most diverse. They took an accolade for that; this isn\u2019t how you celebrate that.\u201d According to the Northeast Valley News, an ASU representative told them \u201dit was solely up to the event organizers on who got in\u2026registered or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Also, here\u2019s basically the whole crowd that watched Jared Taylor. This year\u2019s conference, which will be held Nov. 18-20 at Montgomery Bell State Park Inn in Burns, TN, has announced former US Congressman Steve King and failed Congressional candidate Laura Loomer. As was the case with ASU, AmRen organizers have worked with park officials in the past to ensure that no one, not even those visiting the park will have access to the venue, despite it being a venue that is open to the public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona has a lot of high-profile fascists, some of them running for office.
