Proud Boys: A problem determined to correct itself.

AKRON, OH – Andrew Walls, who has been identified as the vice president of the Akron/Canton Chapter of the Proud Boys, was released from the Summit County Jail on a $25K bond Tuesday as he faces assault and weapons charges stemming from a racist attack on a Black woman outside a bar over the weekend.

Walls, 26, turned himself in to police on Monday and was charged with taken into custody on charges of assault and weapons while intoxicated. A second assault charge regarding another woman that Walls had assaulted. It is possible, according to Akron Police Captain David Laughlin that federal hate crime charges will be filed, with the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Akron chapter of the NAACP calling on federal law enforcement to press full charges against him. “Violence against women, first of all, was cowardly. Period,” said Akron NAACP Judi Hill. “Violence in this case is a hate crime, period. We cannot accept it, we won’t accept it. It cannot keep going on like this. We have to let people know that this isn’t acceptable, not just in Akron, but anywhere.”

Jail entry for Walls.

On Saturday, Cameron Morgan, 23, the daughter of a local sportswriter and teacher, says she was out with friends in the Highland Square when she heard someone calling others the N-word. When she and others told him to stop using the slur, Walls is seen in video of the incident saying to her, “N—– bitch, shut your mouth!” before striking her and one other woman before others tackled him. Morgan went to the hospital with a busted lip and a concussion. Walls was carrying a firearm, which later led to the weapons charge.

Video of the incident went viral over the weekend with some viewers immediately recognizing Walls from photographs of him at on of the Proud Boys with a display of firearms at Kent State in 2019 during a protest. Gavin McInnis, the founder of the Proud Boys, came to Walls’ defense on his Telegram account by suggesting Walls was not the aggressor. “This weekend, a gay Proud Boy was jumped by a group of blacks who were calling him ‘faggot,’” he wrote. “As he stumbled around outside after the beating, a chick was gloating and mocking him. He lost it and punched her while using a racial epithet. The media is running with those last 5 seconds. This is far from over and the truth will come out.”
