A few people have already been sentenced for their role in the fight outside one of Gavin McInnes’ speech in October, and there are more to come. Geoffrey Young is the latest.
MANHATTAN, NY – During a July 6 rally in Washington, DC, Proud Boy founder Gavin McInnes said that the neo-Fascist group “don’t start fights, we finish them.” On Thursday, a judge finished a fight for at least one Proud Boy that started it, giving a 40-weekend jail sentence to Geoffrey Young, one of the Proud Boys who on October 12 attacked antifascist protesters outside the Manhattan Republican Club where McInnes was speaking.
Young, 38, pled guilty to the charges of riot and attempted assault on June 20. The sentence amounts to ten months of weekends in jail. He was one of ten arrested that was involved in the brawl, and becomes the latest person to be sentenced for their role.
The brawl took place just after dozens protested the appearance of McInnes at the Republican Club. Although the initial video implied that antifa provoked the fight by throwing a bottle at the Proud Boys, a video shot at another angle showing that it was the Proud Boys who had initiated the confrontation. McInnes, whose speech at the Club included mocking the assassination of a Jewish socialist leader in the sixties, announced weeks later that he was “officially disassociating” from the group he founded, but only as a tactic to protect those that were arrested, saying, “I’m told by my legal team and law enforcement that this gesture could help alleviate their sentencing.” It has never been revealed who among law enforcement suggested this action to McInnes or why.
Of the ten that were arrested, Douglas Lennan, 40, is to serve five days community service after copping a plea April 5 to one count of riot and one count of attempted assault as does Jake Freijo and Eryk Kacznyski after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct on March 1. John Kinsman, who was called the “single most vicious” member of the crew by prosecutors, David Kuriakose and Maxwell Hare, all facing riot and attempted assault charges, are due in court July 29.
Other Proud Boys arrested were Kyle Borello and David Jacob, while another person, Irvin Antillon, is a member of a Latino neo-Nazi group called B49. At the June 6 rally in DC, McInnes likened assaulting antifa approvingly of Nazis in World War II killing Soviet soldiers, who were part of the Allied forces which included the United States and Great Britain.
Gavin McIness, founder of the pro-Trump gang, likens Proud Boys beating up antifascists to Nazi soldiers in World War II killing Soviet troops. This will look great in court. #AllOutDC #DemandFreeSpeech https://t.co/tVyt2BW1Ue pic.twitter.com/gCKuvjuosw
