Fascist Group Holds DC-Area Flash Mob Rally While Larger Rally Was Held, Avoiding Antifa

“Hey guys, the coast is clear! Let’s rally now before they get back!”

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Since the events of the “Unite the Right Rally” in Charlottesville, VA, the hate group formerly known as Identity Evropa has attempted to organize and remain viable even as they face doxxing, lawsuits and opposition. The strategy at the very least has to avoid facing the opposition however, and that has meant not to hold public rallies as they might have done before the Charlottesville rally, but instead hold flash mobs where a handful of them appear briefly in an unannounced location. Under their new brand American Identity Movement (AmIM), they have continued that strategy, but on Saturday in the Washington, DC area that proved to be a laughable and cowardly one as they held a flash mob just seven miles away from where antifascists who would have been there to oppose them had they been made aware, where gathered en masse to face off a rally being held by the Proud Boys and members of the so-called “Alt Lite” on Freedom Plaza.

Photos found on the AmIM Twitter post show at least 16 persons on the steps of Alexandria City Hall, several of them holding flares as three held a banner with the words “This Land is Our Land”, a play on the title of a song written by antifascist folk singer Woody Guthrie. AmIM leader Patrick Casey is seen on the megaphone speaking, but it is unknown if there were people on the street at the time or if so, if they were receptive. It is also not known how long the group stayed there.

Earlier this week, Unicorn Riot released the group’s private organizing chats, and soon after AmIM said they had canceled their plans for the weekend. Despite having attended the same rallies as Proud Boys in the past, they were not seen at the Freedom Plaza rally.

The leaked chats reveal that AmIM plans to hold a conference Aug. 16-18 in McKinney, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.
